Store Focus: The Method, Edinburgh

The antithesis to “fast fashion”, ethical fashion considers the process just as equally as it does the final outcome. Through nurturing the process, sustainable retailers are able to ensure an eco-friendly outcome; taking the time to work with like-minded suppliers, sourcing natural and environmentally friendly materials and ultimately creating an ethical supply chain. It’s to this end, that today we’d like to shine a light on new independent store, The Method, based in Stockbridge, Edinburgh.

Offering carefully sourced beauty and lifestyle products, The Method encourages us to take pleasure in the journey and process over and above a ‘quick fix’. Founders, brother and sister duo, Dan and Jodi, have cleverly created a space for this founding mantra to be celebrated. Lining the shelves, their clay masks, for instance, are activated by water, which you physically mix into the paste – encouraging us to slow down and take pleasure in this extra step.

Jodi and Dan source their curated selection of products from small independent brands, with the majority made from wild or handpicked ingredients. We went home with a Haeckels candle, one of their bestsellers, in the scent Cliftonville Rain, which gives off the smell of rain on dry earth. Its natural, earthy scent is so authentic and fills the whole room, wrapping you in warmth and comfort. And better yet it’s made from eco-friendly soy wax in a thick glass surround, which you can use as a coffee cup once finished – sold!

To complement their skincare and homeware products, and generally pleasing aesthetic, The Method is also home to a treatment space to “achieve a better equilibrium between mind, body and soul” – their treatments attempt to reinforce this positive lifestyle, one where natural products and one’s well-being are not considered a “luxury” but something we can incorporate into our everyday lives – we’re all for that. Tailored to each individual, you book a session based on its length of time, then with Jodi you figure out which parts of your body need the most attention in order to de-stress and unwind.

We love that sustainability is at the heart of what they do, so much so that it goes without saying. You won’t find them highlight this in their story much because it’s so inherent to what they do. So if you’re ever in the area, we highly recommend you check them out.
